If you’re unsure where to begin, here’s a basic rundown of what measurements you’ll need, what they correspond to, and how you can accurately get them for your employee uniforms.
Neck Measurements
A shirt that hangs at the neck or is too tight around it will look off. Measuring your neck is easy. Make sure to place a measuring tape at the base of the neck and keep it level, with enough room for a finger between the neck and tape. You could also use a reference shirt—find a sweater you know fits well and lay the collar flat. Then you can run your measuring tape from the top button all the way around, and the result in inches corresponds to neck size.
Sleeve Length
Typically, a shirt with sleeves that are too long or short is certainly not ideal for employee uniforms. Just relax the arms, let them hang to your side, then use a measuring tape to check the length from the shoulder seam down to the end of the sleeve. Now you have a sleeve length measurement; it’s that easy.
Waists
Employee uniforms should fit in a way such that it’s still easy and comfortable to move around. To get a good waist measurement, measure directly above the hip bones at the natural waistline. Keep your measuring tape level with a finger of space between the tape and skin, which is essential if you want tight pants to wear without a belt but loose enough to be comfortable.
Chest / Bust
Relax the chest, get your measuring tape, and run it below the arms around you so that it’s across the broadest part of the chest and goes around the shoulder blades. Keep the tape level and avoid pulling it too tightly, and you’ll have your measurement.
Inseam
Think of the inseam as the inside length of the leg. It helps prevent unevenness and a sloppy look. Generally, you’ll want the hem to touch or overlap the shoe slightly, creating a complete look from pant leg to shoes. Measuring this requires running the tape down the inside of the leg while the legs are relaxed and the feet are naturally apart. You can also easily use a pair of pants that you know fit well as a reference.
